King Tigran the Great, famous representative of Artashesyan dynasty (B.C 95-55), had a significant role in strengthening the Armenian statehood.   


   

27.02.2010. 100th Anniversary of Henrik Kasparyan.

 Henrik Kasparyan (1910-1995) was an International Grandmaster, International Judge, Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR, 6-time Champion of chess compositions of the USSR. He published 550 chess compositions.


06.05.2010. 65th Anniversary of Victory Day (Mother Armenia).

 On the stamp we can see Mother Armenia statue and the highest award of the Great Patriotic war – Order of the Great Patriotic war. 

 The 20 meters high statue is the symbol of free and powerful motherland. It was installed in 1967 in Victory Park in Yerevan, and before it on the same pedestal there was Stalin’s statue.

  In 1956, the 6 European nations simultaneously issued the first EUROPA stamps thus reflecting the desire for closer cooperation and integration in Europe building awareness of the common roots, culture and history. This first "Joint Stamp Issue” marked the birth of the most popular and collected stamp in the world - EUROPA stamp. 
  In 1993, PostEurop, which is the Association of European Postal Operators and has 48 European members, became responsible for issuing EUROPA stamps. Every year a theme for issuing stamps is chosen and a competition among the stamps issued is held.
Armenia, as a member of PostEurop, has been also issuing EUROPA stamps. And it is worth mentioning that in 2007 the stamp dedicated to 100 years of scoutism and issued by Armenia, was selected as the best EUROPA stamp 2007. This year the theme is "Children's Books” and Armenia issued a stamp with the picture of 13-year old Irina Balyan, reflecting "Songs of Love” of Nahapet Kuchak, a famous Armenian Poet.


26.11.2010. Winter Olympic Games: Vancouver.

 The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. The Games proved to be a success when more than 250 athletes from 16 nations competed in 16 sport events. In 1925 the IOC decided to create a separate Olympic Winter Games, and the 1924 Games in Chamonix were retroactively designated as the first Winter Olympics. In 1936, at the Summer and Winter Olympics held in Germany alpine skiing made its Olympic debut. 
 In 1938 it was decided to award the 1940 Winter Olympics to Sapporo, Japan, but later this decision was rescinded because of the Japanese invasion of China. The Second World War interrupted the celebration of the Winter Olympics until 1948. In 1948, twelve years later, St. Moritz, Switzerland, was selected to host the first post-war Winter Olympics. 28 countries participated in V Winter Olympics, but the athletes from Germany and Japan were not invited.
  The Games were held every four years from 1924 until 1936 when they were interrupted by World War II. The Olympics resumed in 1948 and were celebrated every four years until 1992. At that point the governing body for the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), decided to place the Summer and Winter Games on separate four-year cycles in alternating even-numbered years.


26.11.2010. Youth Olympic Games. Singapore.

  At the initiative of Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, on 15-26 August 2010 the first Olympic Youth Summer Games were held in Singapore. The idea was to unite 14-18 years old young talented athletes of the world.
  This youth sport exercise was not given the name "Olympic” accidentally since these games are not different from the Olympic games of the adults, and it is planned to hold those once every four years.
  More than 3500 sportsmen and sportswomen demonstrated their skills in 201 sport competitions of 26 sports. 
  Armenia sent 14 representatives of 12 kinds of sports who defended the honor of our country`s sport flag.


26.11.2010.  FOOTBALL WORLD CUP.SOUTH AFRICA.

   By the beginning of the 20th century, with the increasing popularity of football, it became clear that there is a need to create a single international body to oversee association football codes and in 1904 the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in Paris. It tried to arrange an international football tournament between nations and due to its efforts the Football World Cup or simply the World Cup became the world's most widely viewed sporting event. 
   Since the inaugural tournament of the FIFA World Cup in 1930, the competitions have been held every four years, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. 
   From 10 June to 19 July the 19th Football Cup Tournament took place in the Republic of South Africa, in which national teams of 32 countries participated. The national team of Spain became the 19th Football Cup champion in the finals beating the Dutch team with the score 1:0. The Spanish team will defend their title at the next tournament to be held in Brazil.


26.11.2010.ARMENIAN OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS.

   Armenian sportsmen have been participating in the Olympic Games since 1952. Until 1991 they have appeared under the flag of the USSR. In 1992 the former Soviet Union Republics appeared under the CIS flag, but since 1996 the Armenian athletes have been representing the independent Armenia in the World Olympic Games.
   Armenia has had 13 champions and it's the second year that stamps have been issued in their honor.
   This year Armenia has issued a souvenir sheet dedicated to V. Yengibaryan, boxer and Olympic champion of 1956, Melbourne, Faina Melnik (light athletics, disc-throwing), 1972, Munich, and weight- lifter Yuri Vardanyan, Olympic champion of 1980, Moscow.


27.12.2010. The 150th anniversary of Leo (Araqel Babakhanyan).

  Arakel Babakhanyan (1860-1932), or Leo as he was later known, was an Armenian historian and publicist, who authored numerous historical and journalistic works and articles. The fact that Leo was the first to use "pure” Armenian in his writings brought him early prominence. 

  Leo was born in Shushi, Artsakh, where he studied in the local parish school, after which he continued his self-education and came to an early prominence. His works were published in Tiflis (Tbilisi), Baku, Venice, etc. He was a progressive scholar, had a scrupulous mind and subjected conservative thinking and clericalism to a severe criticism.

  From 1895 to 1924 he lived in Tiflis (Tbilisi) which to him was a town with a unique Armenian traditional culture and appearance. Leo worked in the editing house of "Mshak” Armenian journal where he published his thoughts about the Armenian reality, the Armenian Case, ruined and dissected Armenia. In 1924 Leo moved to Yerevan and worked in the Yerevan State University until he died in 1932.


27.12.2010.  The 175th anniversary of the birth of Raffi.

  Armenian writer and publicist Raffi (Hakob Melik- Hakobyan) was born in a rich noble family in the village of Payajuk, Salmast region, Persia (Iran).
  In 1847 he went to Tiflis (Tbilisi, Georgia) where he entered the Russian State Gymnasium, where his literary hobbies were formed.
  Raffi traveled much in the Armenian regions of Persia and Turkey, put down the rich impressions about the daily life of the people, nature and geography and historical memories which were reflected later in his works in the future.
  Raffi was immediately distinguished due to his fresh ideas, polished language and figurative and impressive style. His works were considered as an encyclopedia for the complex social and political events of that time and the history of the modern period.
